You and your daughter will sashay back and forth between the ‘things’ involved like ‘Save the Date cards, where, how many, etc and what you’ll wear and how you both will look. Although the focus is on her for the entire day, you know everyone will be watching you as well and checking out the hairdo as well as everything else you and your husband have on! But let’s just think about the hair. Your hair. PLEASE don’t let your hairdresser talk you into something totally different the day of the wedding! Try different looks a few months out when no one will see you for a couple of days. (You do want the “do” to be a surprise, right?)
We do have to be careful not to look absurd or to try too hard end up like well, you know…that look that makes your friend’s say “What was she thinking?!” -such as this way too casual ponytail that Sheryl Crow is wearing at a formal occasion.
It’s almost guaranteed to be fatal to try to resemble the young, particularly going for the straight shining fall of a young girl’s hair with hair that just isn’t quite as thick and luxurious as it used to be. If you are fortunate enough to have really thick hair and you are over 50 or 60, then by all means find a lovely way
to show it off !
Eat for healthy hair! Omega-3 fatty acids (found in cold-water fish like salmon) and protein (think nuts and cheese) are the best follicle fuel, says Oz Garcia, a nutritionist in New York City.
Hair needs more care as we get older. The young dye their hair to look different whereas we dye ours to go on looking more or less the same. And though pure white is wonderful- (Dame Judi Dench shows us just how to do it – pixie style!), dye is a gift for those of us whose undyed hair looks like a used Brillo pad or or the color just makes us look washed out and the dreaded word OLDER.
Color is a grand thing for us – check out this gorgeous shade on Michelle Pfeiffer’s beautiful curly locks.
As posted in Fifty-Something Women: Looking good over 50 will keep you feeling positive and youthful, but many women opt for short, cropped, austere, grey hairstyles and seem to give up on having luscious locks. Very short hair is easy to manage, and won’t necessarily need daily washing, but it can appear unfeminine and harsh around the face. If you can resist the pressure to have the chop, you could consider a neat, shoulder length style that frames the face, soft curls or a classic bob. Layered styles are also kind to the over 50s and look trendy and modern. Sally Field shows a perfectly lovely way to incorporate a flattering look for the 50-70s ladies.
However, getting back to curly hair – don’t make the mistake Vanessa Williams shows us of mixing straight and really curly,As a rule, softer hair colors look best on older women, so it’s a good idea to avoid dark colors like jet black, blue-back or dark brown. Vanessa’s color look great! Your look can also be softened with highlights or by using multi-toned colorants that give a natural appearance.
A good hairdresser will be able to advise you on the best color for your skin tone, which can change with the menopause and may lighten with ageing. Of course, there’s no reason why you can’t go for a dramatic look if you can carry it off. We’ve all seen those women whose salt and pepper hair is ‘to die for’!
Here’s hoping you have a ‘wonderful hair day’ on her day! Oh & yes – NO blue or pink hair!
Hope you have a wonderful holiday week ! Claudia Van Veen (MoB)
